Laser Wavelength & Cutting Physics Guide

Understanding why specific lasers succeed or fail on certain materials prevents expensive purchasing mistakes:

1. 10,640 nm CO2 Lasers (xTool P2, OMTech Polar, OMTech Cabinet)

  • Best For: Wood, plywood, cast and extruded acrylics (including 100% transparent clear), leather, glass etching, fabric, rubber stamps.
  • Physics Advantage: The 10.6 ยตm wavelength is heavily absorbed by organic materials and silicates. Clear acrylic absorbs 100% of the beam, yielding polished, optical-grade cut margins.
  • Limitations: Raw metals reflect the beam safely away without marking unless a specialized laser thermal spray (Cermark) is applied.

2. 1064 nm Fiber & MOPA Lasers (OMTech MOPA, xTool F1 Ultra)

  • Best For: Bare metals (titanium, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, tool steel), engineering plastics (ABS, PEEK), high-speed barcodes, and jewelry.
  • Physics Advantage: The 1.064 ยตm wavelength couples directly into the conductive electron matrix of metals. MOPA models allow variable pulse frequencies to generate controlled oxide colors (rainbow hues on titanium and stainless steel).
  • Limitations: Wood and clear acrylics are transparent or prone to charred burning rather than clean vaporization.

3. 455 nm Visible Blue Diode Lasers (xTool S1, xTool F1)

  • Best For: Wood, dark/black acrylics, leather, coated metal marking, slate, and general craft fabrication.
  • Physics Advantage: Compact solid-state diodes require zero liquid cooling, delivering Class 1 enclosed safety at half the price of CO2 tubes.
  • Limitations: Cannot cut transparent, clear, white, or light blue acrylics (the blue light passes straight through without heating).
